What is gum disease?
Also known as gingivitis, gum disease is a common oral health issue that is, thankfully, easily preventable. Some symptoms that might indicate you’re suffering from gum disease include inflamed gums, bleeding or receding gums, and increased sensitivity. If you’re experiencing pain when brushing your teeth, this might also be a sign that you’re in need of dental hygiene treatment.
Why is it important to treat gum disease?
How can I prevent gum disease?
Gum disease is best prevented through preventative dental care, regular, rigorous and effective health care will help. We recommend once or twice a year – to a gum disease dentist or dental hygienist.

What To Expect During your Hygiene appointment
Effective Dental Hygiene advice
Flossing your teeth is an important part of oral hygiene that can prevent plaque buildup, gum disease and tooth decay. Our dental hygienist Lauren Skornia shares some useful tips to floss your teeth effectively and comfortably.
During your visit to Wistaria House Dental, our team will guide you through any treatment so you’re fully aware of the best practices and aftercare.
What is a dental hygiene treatment like?
Your dental hygiene appointment is also a chance for our skilled hygienists to thoroughly examine the gums and the structures that support the teeth. This is to help identify, prevent, protect, and in some cases treat them for gum disease. There will also be a full cleaning of the gums and teeth, finishing off with a polish so that you leave the practice with a healthy, happy looking smile.
Effective Dental Hygiene advice
We have recently upgraded our hygiene appointments with the installation Airflow – Air Flow uses a fine spray of warmed water and Erythritol PLUS powder to gently deep clean the tooth surface above and below the gumline. This minimally invasive technology is safe to use on all oral surfaces and difficult to reach paces: enamel, dentine, soft tissues, restorations, orthodontic appliances and implants.
EMS Airflow® guided biofilm therapy uses a combination of air, warm water and ultrafine powder to help remove plaque, calculus and certain stains from tooth surfaces. Your dentist or hygienist will explain what the process involves so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you.
